আরেকটি গোর্কি কিংবা সিডর আঘাত হানলে নোয়াখালী উপকূলে নামবে লাশের মিছিল [রুদ্র মাসুদ-] ১৯৭০ সালের ১২ নভেম্বরের ভয়াল গোর্কিতে এই নোয়াখালী উপক‚লের অর্ধলক্ষাধিক লোকের প্রাণহানির পর গোটা উপক‚ল জুড়ে ব্যাপক বনায়নের ফলে সুন্দরবনের মতো সবুঝ ঢাল তৈরী হয়। যার ফলে ১৯৯১ সালের ঘূর্ণিঝড়ে এখানে জানমালের ক্ষতি ছিলো খুবই কম। বৈশ্বিক উষ্ণতা বৃদ্ধির ফলে জলবায়ু পরিবর্তন এবং ঘন ঘন ঘূর্ণিঝড় সৃষ্টির দরুণ নোয়াখালী উপক‚ল এখন পরিণত হয়েছে মৃত্যুকুপে। আরেকটি গোর্কি কিংবা সিডর আঘাত হানলে নোয়াখালী উপক‚লে লাশের মিছিল পড়বে। উপক‚লীয় এলাকার ৭০হাজার একর জমির বন উজাড় হয়ে যাওয়ায় এই ঝুঁকি বাড়িয়েছে বহুগুনে। এই বিপদাপন্ন মানুষগুলোর পাশে সরকার কিংবা সরকারি সংস্থাগুলোর উপস্থিতি নগণ্য। উপরন্তু বেসরকারি উদ্যোগও চোখে পড়ার মতো নয়। নোয়াখালীর জেলা প্রশাসক এককথায় শুধু বললেন 'বিষয়টি ভয়াবহ'।
